Paco Romane is a comedian, actor, writer, and podcaster whose career spans more than two decades of stand-up, sketch comedy, improvisation, television, and film. A longtime fixture of San Francisco’s comedy scene, Romane has built a reputation for sharp writing, lightning-fast crowd work, and an uncanny ability to turn the strange details of everyday life into hilarious, often hard-to-believe stories. His comedy moves effortlessly between carefully crafted jokes and spontaneous improvisation, creating performances where neither the audience nor Romane himself is entirely sure what might happen next.

Critics have described his style as “smart, silly, fast, and funny,” while Spinning Platters called him “one of the greatest Bay Area comedians.” NPR described him as “hilarious and at the top of the comedy scene.”

Stand-Up Comedy

Twice voted Best Comedian by the San Francisco Bay Guardian (2005) and SF Weekly (2012), Romane was also a finalist in the 2023 San Francisco Comedy Competition. His energetic, improvisational approach has made him a distinctive presence in stand-up, blending observational humor, personal storytelling, and spontaneous interactions with audiences. Whether he’s riffing about relationships, his everyman physique, or another questionable life decision, Romane approaches the stage with a combination of quick wit, infectious energy, and an ability to find humor in unexpected places.

A nationally touring headliner, Romane is a passed regular at the San Francisco Punch Line, Sacramento Punch Line, Cobb’s Comedy Club, Rooster T. Feathers, and San Jose Improv. His performances have taken him to some of the country’s best-known comedy venues, including The Comedy Store, Hollywood Improv, Zanies, Stand Up Live, and House of Blues Las Vegas.

A longtime presence on the festival circuit, Romane has performed at SF Sketchfest nearly every year since 2003, as well as Outside Lands, SF Comedy Day, the Vancouver Comedy Festival, LaughFest, and the Gulf Coast Comedy Festival.

Over the years, he’s shared stages with Robin Williams, Norm Macdonald, Ali Wong, Nate Bargatze, Maria Bamford, and Dana Gould. Williams, with whom Romane worked, once described him as “sharp as a knife and quick as lightning, with just the right amount of charm.”

His debut comedy album, Shaped Like a Thumb, captures the loose, unpredictable energy and storytelling that have become hallmarks of his live performances.

Television, Writing & Sketch Comedy

Beyond stand-up, Romane has built an extensive career in television, writing, and sketch comedy. His credits include Comedy Central, HBO, NBC, Drunk History, The Eric Andre Show, Nickelodeon, Funny or Die, and NPR.

As a writer, he’s contributed to Netflix’s Norm Macdonald Has a Show and the Gilbert Gottfried Roast, bringing his distinctive comedic perspective to projects that range from scripted comedy to the unpredictable world of celebrity roasts.

Romane has also been a company member of San Francisco’s celebrated sketch comedy institution Killing My Lobster since 2003. His work with the company has included performing, writing, and collaborating on original sketch comedy productions, further developing the improvisational instincts and character-driven humor that inform his stand-up.

As a producer and host, Romane created The Romane Event, one of San Francisco’s longest-running independent comedy shows, which became a showcase for both emerging performers and established comedians. He also created and hosted Charm Offensive, another popular San Francisco comedy production.

Throughout his years in the Bay Area, Romane became a familiar presence in the city’s stand-up, sketch, and alternative comedy communities, building a career that frequently crossed the boundaries between traditional comedy clubs, independent theaters, and live performance.

Acting & Voice-Over

Romane’s acting work includes an appearance in the Academy Award–winning film Milk, as well as national advertising campaigns featuring hip-hop legend E-40, NBA champion Klay Thompson, and Mr. T.

As a voice-over artist, his credits include Pandora Radio, Roku, Visa, and Little Caesars. He’s also recorded voices for Pixar film projects, national commercials, and video games.

His voice work reflects the same versatility that defines his live performances, moving between commercial narration, character work, and comedy.

Podcasting & Radio

Since 2015, Romane has co-created and co-hosted Sup Doc, a documentary podcast that combines comedy, criticism, and conversations about documentary films. The show has featured discussions with filmmakers, comedians, and other guests, approaching everything from acclaimed documentaries to obscure cinematic discoveries with equal parts curiosity and humor.

Vulture described Sup Doc as “a nice appetizer if you plan to see a documentary — or a great after-doc treat.”

Romane is also the host of Hito Dama, a weekly radio show on 103.3 FM KOBV-LP, where he mixes jazz, funk, soul, listener call-ins, and comedy into two hours of unpredictable broadcasting. Airing Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. Central, the show brings together his love of music, improvisation, and conversation.

Its tagline sums things up: “Music and Mayhem.”

After nearly three decades in San Francisco, Romane relocated to Northwest Arkansas, where he continues to perform, write, produce, and develop new projects while headlining comedy clubs and festivals across the country.

A natural improviser with a gift for turning ordinary moments into extraordinary stories, Romane delivers the kind of comedy where even he isn’t entirely sure what’s going to happen next.

Despite an otherwise cheerful disposition, he maintains an unwavering hostility toward IPAs, pineapple on pizza, and Phil Collins.
